Family Spotlight | Guatemala | June 26, 2017

Family Spotlight
San Raymundo, Guatemala
Stephy Soto (summer intern) taking a selfie with Maria, her family, and the team of volunteers
"I've never slept on your idea of a bed, bathed in what you would call a shower, or owned a cell phone. Let me give you a better idea of perhaps what I have done. I, by the grace of God, have survived a life of 26 years. I've raised my four kids in the midst of a challenging life, a life that got exceedingly harder a year ago when my husband passed away from colon cancer. My house was about 6 feet tall with 3 walls and a roof, each made by a single sheet of tin. It totaled about 35 square feet. I earn about $14 a week making firework wicks. It's a very dangerous job as it consists of rolling up newspaper into the size of a cigarette butt and stuffing it with gunpowder."
--Maria Carmelina Boch Tops

Maria's world was completely flipped upside down a few weeks ago. Pastor Heyson Bohr serves on the Casas por Cristo pastor's committee in San Raymundo, Guatemala. Each month he has the opportunity to submit an application for a home on behalf of a family in need. Last month, the night before the meeting, he didn't have anyone in mind that needed a home, so he got down on his knees and prayed, "God, please reveal to me the person you've chosen to receive the next house." His prayer was interrupted by a knock at his door. He got up to find a woman who had heard of Casas and wanted to get some help for her daughter-in-law, Maria. As is required, Pastor Heyson made plans to check out the conditions of Maria's home to make sure she really needed help. He ended up going in search of her property by himself, but had some trouble finding it. He felt God calling him down a certain dirt road and ended up in a town called Los Ajuixes. He kept stopping to ask the locals if anyone knew Maria. Eventually, he reached the end of the road at the bottom of a hill and found her and her four children living in a three sided shack.
The home Maria and her four children previously inhabited
Behind the scenes, God had prepared a mission team from Fayetteville, Georgia to fly down and build Maria a home. It was a difficult build due to some heavy rainfall. Nonetheless, after three days of labor, a house complete with electricity and a porch was built. Two beds, a water filter, and other commodities in making a home comfortable were given.
At the dedication, Pastor Heyson shared a story from Maria's oldest son, Jeremias (9 years old). He had a dream a few nights before of his daddy in heaven telling him that one day they would have a house. And there he stood, on the porch of his new three room home. How beautiful the thought that both fathers were watching down to provide for this family.

We do not know where Maria is in her walk with God. Pastor Heyson will follow up to make sure the Gospel continues to be conveyed. Please pray for Maria and her family as well as all the other families receiving homes this summer. Pray that they will understand just how grand God's provision is, but more importantly, how grand his invitation is to be his daughter or son.

Family Spotlight | Acuña, México

Meet Raymundo Santos, his wife, Yonelli Zamarron Fuentes, and their young son, Raymundo B Santos. The 2015 summer interns built a much needed home for this family in July. The home that they were previously living in consisted of old and broken down pallets with a rocky floor.

Former intern Victoria Owens explained, "One thing that really got to me on the first day was the fact that their original 'house' had no interior walls, just sheets hanging from the ceiling to indicate the separation of 'rooms,' and it had dirt floors. I have built for lots of families, some poorer than others. But without a doubt, the Santos family had the worst living conditions I have ever seen in both of my internships. And they had a three year old son running around barefoot through all of it. This was all the motivation we needed for the week and definitely helped us to stay focused and want to do a good job."

This was not an easy build for the interns, nor was it easy for the family. In the beginning there wasn't even enough flat land to build a house. Raymundo, who is a twenty-six-year-old fried chicken cook, worked diligently for weeks to fill in the land. When the interns arrived to begin construction they still had a lot of leveling to do. "This was the most challenging, sweaty, tiring, intern build of the summer, but we were so happy that we got to be a part of it. We had to dig down eighteen inches on one of the corners since it was on a hill, and we couldn't raise it. It was kind of dangerous and we were all a little nervous," Owens said.

Our interns spend a lot of time leading volunteer teams through the construction process. However, for Raymundo's family, they got to do an intern only build, without a team. It was a special treat for the interns to take a little break from team leading, which allowed them to focus on building the house and spending quality time with the family.

"The group of interns got extremely close over this week. We had to deal with a lot of hard work that we weren't really expecting (because intern builds are usually pretty easy), but that made the end result that much more rewarding. The family was so good to us, and we all wanted to keep 'Little Raymundo' forever. He was absolutely the most adorable three year old ever, and he helped us all three days of the build. He would take our hammers out of our hands and start hammering away. He fully understood that it was going to be his new house, and he wanted to help build it," Owens shared.

Even though it was a rough beginning, it turned out to be an amazing week for the family and the interns. Owens said, "Some of my favorite memories from the 2015 summer internship happened during this week. It impacted me more than I thought it would." Raymundo and his wife attend Yonelli's father's church. Their faith and hope in God were evident in the passion they exuded during the dedication ceremony where they received the keys to their new home. They understood that this was a gift from God that would serve as a continual reminder of his love. They were so thankful that their son now has a safe place to grow and learn about how great God is. Please pray for this young family as they continue to trust in God's provision for their lives.

Intern Reflections

Intern Reflections
Our interns spent three months building homes, serving families, and partnering with volunteer teams to further God's kingdom in México, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Check out what four of our 2015 summer interns have to say about their experiences serving with Casas por Cristo.

Demetria Boatwright
The internship gave me an opportunity to see how God is moving through Casas por Cristo to empower pastors as they work together to serve their communities. Working with Casas also taught me to see myself differently. Instead of seeing my weaknesses and inability, I see God's strength and power to glorify himself through those very weaknesses.

Titus Snavely
2015 Summer Intern in Juárez, México
I saw God moving through the relationships that were formed over the summer. Connecting with the other interns really helped to sharpen my relationship with Christ. Just like iron sharpens iron so man sharpens man. Becoming closer to the staff members and listening to their wisdom helped me to connect with God, as well. But the relationships that I built with the families that received the homes we constructed is where I saw God move the most! They gave so much thanks to God, and I could see how much of a blessing I had been to them through God.

Hans Tvedt
2015 Summer Intern in San Raimundo, Guatemala

The Casas internship program has probably been the most rewarding and humbling experience in my life. With all that the internship gives, it takes a lot of financial, physical, mental, and spiritual sacrifice. Through all this I saw God constantly providing. He provided us, the interns, with strength. He provided Casas with the groups and manpower for the work. He provided the groups with, "open hearts and willing spirits," as my fellow intern Savannah Silver would say. Finally, He provided the families with homes to show how much He loves and cares for all of His people. We had to fully rely on God to get us through the summer and to accomplish all that we have done. His faithfulness is everlasting!

John Ambrosich
2015 Summer Intern in Acuña, México
This summer had so many moving moments. One time in particular was when I stayed a little later on the work site to complete a few small tasks, such as installing the outside light and hooking up a double light switch. We were building a home for a single mother with three children. I invited her in to take a look at her new home in progress, and the presence of the Lord filled the room; we were both moved to tears at what God was doing. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

Please Pray
  • Pray for our interns as they transition back to their normal lives.
  • Pray that they would continue to follow God's leading in their lives.
  • Pray that God would continue to work in their hearts and impact others through them.
  • Pray for their futures as they are in the time of life when their decisions will have tremendous impact on the direction their paths take.
