Interview with Tyler

 1. Tell a little bit about yourself and where you're from.

  • I am originally from Mitchell, South Dakota. I grew up in the countryside on our farm and spent most of my time working alongside my dad. I attended the University of South Dakota for 6 years where I earned a Master of Art in Biology degree. It wasn't until March 2013 that I was introduced to Casas por Cristo when I went on my first build to Juárez with a group from my hometown. I then spent the summer as an intern in Guatemala, began my apprenticeship in September 2013, and officially joined staff January 1, 2014. Thus far, seeking biblical truths has led me on an incredible journey of faith -- not filled with comfort, complacency or contentment, but a burning desire for challenge, sacrifice, and simplicity. And for those of you who enjoy random facts, I'm addicted to coffee and green apple Chap Stick.

2. What made you choose to serve at Casas por Cristo?

  • I'm a firm believer in "Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary, use words." After my first build with CpC, I immediately fell in love with the people we serve, the simplicity of their lifestyle, and the mission of Casas. I love being able to share the Gospel with people in a real, tangible way. After all, it isn't the sermons that are preached or lessons that are taught, but the lives we live due to the love of Christ compelling us forward.

3. How have you seen God in your ministry at Casas por Cristo?

  • God continues to write His story on the hearts of the families we build for, the pastors of local churches, the communities we serve, and the team members who partner with us. To see how these stories intertwine, weave together, and play out as part of a much larger story is a difficult feeling to describe. Dreams have become reality, lives have been changed, and the hope of a paradise yet to come is what people cling to after witnessing Christ's love in action.

4. What has been your biggest challenge so far?

  • Thus far, my biggest challenge has been the feeling of wanting to help everyone, but realizing the reality of that just isn't possible. Living in an area where the need is overwhelmingly great, we're continuously approached by families who are in need of a home, yet we don't have additional applications. I've come to learn that it is okay to physically help those whom God places in our path, one at a time, while praying He will provide for the rest.
Prayer Requests

  • Ability to learn Spanish
  • Additional financial support and partnerships
  • Casas por Cristo: leadership, missionaries, pastors, families, teams
  • Spiritual, physical, and emotional strength as our summer season approaches
  • My mom and 2 sisters, as living so far away from family is definitely challenging
