Family Spotlight
Ciudad Acuña, México

Manuel & Family
Volunteers from Hope Christian Church
Meet Manuel Aguero Romo and his family. Manuel is over 90 years old. He worked for many years as a street sweeper for the city of Acuña, México. He loves the Lord and is still spunky and full of life, though his hands are scarred and permanently calloused from a lifetime of hard work and difficult circumstances. He, his wife Rosa María, his daughter Lupita, his son-in-law Alejandro, and his grandson Victor live off a small pension from the city. We are so grateful that Hope Christian Church drove all the way from Columbia, Illinois and endured the extreme summer heat to build a safe home for Manuel and his family. Before the team arrived, the family had been living in a small block house that could not stand up to the elements. When it rained, they couldn't sleep because their only bed got soaked. Rosa María shared at the dedication that she spent the last few years pleading with God to provide for her family, crying, "When will we get a house that doesn't leak?" She never thought it was going to happen. Now, they have a dry and secure place to call home. Praise God for providing for this family!

Alejandro & Lupita
Alejandro Studying
Newlyweds Alejandro and Lupita have spent the last two months sharing a one room block home with Lupita's parents and son. Alejandro proudly showed us the formal white dress and commemorative photos from their special day. Alejandro loves studying the Bible and preaching at his church. He showed us the notes he has been taking in a personal Bible study workbook. However, he did not have a Bible of his own to study, which made things difficult. Alejandro asked the team for a Bible in Spanish each day when we left the work site. So, at the home dedication ceremony, Alejandro was overjoyed to be handed exactly what he had asked for. Now, Alejandro will be able to study on his own and prepare sermons for his church from his very own Bible.

Victor & Manuel
Victor in his new room
Victor, Manuel's grandson, is sixteen years old. He loves spending time with his family, helping to care for his aging grandparents, and watching wrestling, which is his favorite hobby. He has so few belongings and resources to enjoy his hobby, but that does not stop him. He proudly showed the team an incredibly intricate 3-D model of a wrestling ring and individual wrestlers he had created using notebook paper, tape, markers, and other small craft items. Victor had little to offer to the team of volunteers to thank them for building a house for his family, but he gave what he had. He gave all of his home-made wrestling figures as gifts to individual team members. At the end of the week, the team members bought a few housewarming gifts to help the family furnish their new home. When Victor saw the gifts he nearly broke down in tears. The team had also purchased a special gift for him, a large John Cena figurine, which Victor said he will always cherish.
